Hyundai Mobis Opens Its First European EV Powertrain Plant in Novaky, Slovakia
Summary: Hyundai Mobis has begun mass-producing electric powertrain systems at a new plant in Novaky, Slovakia, its first such facility in Europe, The Korea Herald reported on September 3, 2026. The company invested about 250 billion won (184 million US dollars) in the site, which can produce 280,000 power electric, or PE, systems annually, strengthening its foothold in the region's electric vehicle market.
The plant
The Novaky facility spans 106,000 square metres, with 8,500 square metres of floor space housing stator and inverter production lines. It is Hyundai Mobis' third electrification production base in Europe, joining its battery system plants in the Czech Republic and Spain, and expands an electrification production network that also covers South Korea, the US, the Czech Republic and Indonesia.
What a PE system is
- An electric motor that drives the wheels.
- An inverter that converts electrical current for the motor.
- A reducer that adapts motor speed and torque to the driveline.
- All three combined into a single integrated powertrain unit.
Opening ceremony
Hyundai Mobis held an opening ceremony attended by about 100 government and EU officials, customers and suppliers. Participants included Hyundai Mobis CEO Lee Kyu-seok (Lee Kyu-seok), Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Robert Fico), Economy Minister Denisa Sakova (Denisa Sakova) and Trencin Governor Jaroslav Baska (Jaroslav Baska). The attendance underlines how central the plant is to Slovakia's position as a European car-production hub.
European strategy behind the investment
The auto parts supplier views Europe, the world's second-largest EV market, as a key growth region. Slovakia hosts manufacturing operations for major automakers including Kia, Volkswagen, Stellantis and Volvo, and Hyundai Mobis expects the location to improve its ability to respond to European demand and win more global orders. The company aims to raise the share of revenue generated from global customers to 40 percent by 2033, with the Novaky plant serving as a key base for that push.
For the supplier, the Slovak site converts proximity into capability: stator and inverter lines placed inside the continent's densest car-manufacturing cluster shorten response times to customer engineering changes and position the company for orders beyond its traditional group customers.
