Avio USA starts work on its Virginia manufacturing site
Avio USA has started work on its first manufacturing facility in the United States, an approximately 900,000-square-foot solid rocket motor plant in Hurt, Virginia. Groundbreaking on 29 September 2026 advances a planned industrial development intended to expand domestic supply capacity. Construction is expected to finish in late 2028, with production anticipated in early 2029.
A new industrial presence in Southern Virginia
The plant is being developed at the Southern Virginia Multimodal Park. Avio USA expects roughly 1,500 technical jobs as the operation grows. That is a prospective staffing figure, rather than a report that the full workforce has already been hired. The groundbreaking likewise marks the start of construction, not the beginning of commercial output.
Manufacturing Dive's 2 October update describes the project as a $500 million facility investment. The investment amount concerns the planned development and should not be presented as expenditure already completed on the day of the ceremony. The company's announcement identifies a new source of industrial capacity, with further building and operating milestones still ahead.
Construction and intended customer role
HITT Contracting is the general contractor. The facility is intended to support several customers and programmes in the domestic defence industry, including programmes for Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. These stated relationships describe the intended market and supply role; the announcement does not mean that every future order or delivery has already occurred.
- Location: Hurt, Virginia, at Southern Virginia Multimodal Park.
- Planned facility area: approximately 900,000 square feet.
- Construction target: late 2028.
- Anticipated production start: early 2029.
Avio USA describes its objective as operating as an independent supplier available to multiple customers. Its parent, Avio S.p.A., brings experience in propulsion and aerospace manufacturing. The new project establishes an American industrial presence while remaining subject to the work needed to complete construction and prepare the plant for operation.
Company background and project status
Avio USA is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, and is a subsidiary of Italy-based Avio S.p.A. The business has a U.S.-based board and is led by chief executive James Syring. The company states that it operates under the relevant U.S. security and export-control arrangements. This release concerns the corporate development and employment plan; it contains no manufacturing instructions or technical design details.
The announced dates remain expectations. Further project updates will establish when construction is complete and production begins. Keeping these milestones separate from the groundbreaking provides a clear account of the present stage without turning future capacity into a current operating result.
